They were meant to be together so when I learned that the Guggenheim Museum was celebrating the 50th anniversary of its landmark building with an in-depth retrospective of the Russian avant-garde artist Wasilly Kandinsky, I knew I had to go.
“The Angel in The Architecture,” trumpeted The New York Times headline for the review of the Guggenheim show, which runs through January 10. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the building especially for the museum’s founding collection of Kandinsky’s non-objective work.

Somerville and Cambridge, MA - Davis Square thronged with crowds excited to see the dozens of marching bands from around the world performing at this weekend's Honk! Festival. Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society kicked off the music and arts festival Saturday afternoon at 7 Hills Park, taking band attendance in loud, rowdy fashion, and sending them marching to all corners of Davis to perform throughout the day. Sunday, bands paraded from Davis square down Massachusetts Avenue to Harvard Square for encore performances at Oktoberfest. Photo, audio, and video coverage follows.Bookmark/Search this post with: -

Michael Moore has wrestled with Congress, insurance companies, the National Rifle Association, General Motors, and various players in the “military-industrial complex."
But Goliath has never been this big…
In his new film, “Capitalism: A Love Story” which opened nationwide on Friday, Michael Moore (playing David) “volunteers” to save his tribe by taking on the behemoths that sit atop our economic system; i.e. the banks and mega-financial services corporations – companies such as AIG, Bank of America, and Goldman Sachs – who many believe are responsible for the global economic disaster that erupted into public view 18 months ago.

BOSTON/Jamaica Plain - In a time when new iPod models are released every few months, the ways in which we work, play, and express ourselves have become increasingly dependent on digital technology. It may be surprising that a group of twentysomethings can already feel nostalgic for the objects that marked their childhood, but the relentless rate of technological change means that once familiar products such as VHS tapes, cassettes, floppy disks, popular toys, and Polaroids have become antiquated in a relatively short period of time. Four local, young artists react to the rapid change of popular culture in their exhibit ICONOGRAPHIC: Analog Representations of Youth Culture in a Digital Age. The show opened last Thursday evening at JP Art Market, a gallery and studio run by artist Patti Hudson in Jamaica Plain.

BOSTON/Back Bay - My conversation Saturday with actress and comedienne Marla Gibbs and her daughter Angela Gibbs - actress, director, and producer - could have gone on for hours. But the two women, visiting Boston for the Roxbury Film Festival this weekend, were required to meet with festival organizers, and of course, see some movies.

BOSTON/Dudley Square and various other locations - A person only has one heart. But a city has multiple centers of life-giving blood. In Boston, known for its multiplicity of neighborhoods, one of those cultural organs beats at the Hibernian Hall in Dudley Square.
Home to ACT Roxbury - an arts, culture, and economic development program sponsored by the Madison Park Development Corporation - and the 11th Annual Roxbury Film Festival, the building was buzzing with activity this week as staff members prepared for the weekend line-up of film showings and special events.

Walking hand-in-hand along a New York street, the elderly couple seem unremarkable. He is stooped with age and uses a cane. She is still spry and gently helps him. Profiled in the prize-winning film, “Herb and Dorothy,” the Vogels look like a granny and a grampa - straight out of central casting.
Appearances are deceiving. Megumi Sasaki’s documentary reveals an extraordinary couple. The film screened earlier this year at the Jewish Film Festival and is now at the Landmark Theater, Kendall Square, Cambridge.
