BOSTON - A diverse 300-person rally was held yesterday at 4 p.m. in honor of May Day, the traditional international workers holiday, at the Boston Common Bandstand. Various speakers at the event addressed the need for labor and immigrant rights. A number of musicians provided entertainment. About 15 anti-immigrant counter-demonstrators were also present, and were kept at the outskirts of the rally by Boston Police. At 5:30 p.m., the attendees - their ranks now swelled to 400 after more people got off of work - marched to Copley Square. After another short rally, most of the participants dispersed, but a "Red and Black Bloc" of about 50 anarchists and socialists headed off to continue an unscripted march elsewhere in the city.
