Change the Media Change the World: The National Conference for Media Reform - Boston April 2011
Extra, extra! Celebrity gossip! Horserace election coverage! Reality television! The same song (again) on (every) radio station! Even higher Internet bills for slower speeds!
Wait. Anyone else feeling they are being ripped-off? Or perhaps falling into the “mad-as-hell-and-not-going-to-take-it-anymore” category?
Alright -- so let’s do something about it.
Every issue that we care about and every struggle that we fight is communicated through media. We see the images in newspapers and magazines. We see the actions (and inactions) of those in power on television. And we hear the evangelizing of talk radio hosts over the airwaves.
Radio, television, newspapers and blogs all set the terms of our debates and agendas. But they are also powerful tools for social change. The laws that shape our media system have been decided behind closed doors by powerful lobbyists and corporations for too long. We believe the public needs a seat at that table.
If we want to change the world, we are going to need to change the media first.
The National Conference for Media Reform, hosted by Free Press, is coming to Boston next April 8-10, 2011. The event will be an opportunity to connect with thousands of other activists, organizers, media makers, academics, policy makers, journalists and people who are concerned about our media system. The conference will feature three days of workshops, speeches, networking events and parties for us to share information, exchange ideas and build the relationships necessary to build a better world through better media.
But we need your help. Have a great idea for a workshop or a panel? Know a speaker that we should feature at the event? Now’s the time to let us know; our call for suggestions is open through September 10th: www.freepress.net/call-for-suggestions.
Want to find out more about the event? Sign up for updates or follow us on Facebook. We can’t wait to hear your ideas!
