BOSTON/Back Bay - Five women active in local, state and national election campaigns appeared for a political roundtable on Saturday, where they urged their audience to run for office and take back the “F-word” in 2010. That’s F for Feminist, and there were dozens of them seated in Boston’s Park Plaza Hotel during a conference hosted by the National Organization for Women.

BOSTON/State House - A jubilant group of over 50 activists from the Student Immigrant Movement and allied organizations held a press conference on Friday to announce a victory in their campaign to get the Mass. legislature to overturn several provisions of an amendment to the Senate budget proposal for FY 2011 that they believe was an assault on immigrant rights.

Protest Targets Former Union Carbide and Current Dow Leadership Calls for Justice for Bhopal Disaster Victims

Cambridge, MA - Outraged at the June 7 decision by an Indian local court to convict 7 former officials of Union Carbide of India Limited of criminal negligence in the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy rather than prosecute them on more serious charges for their roles in the deaths of thousands of residents of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, India, over 30 local advocates held a protest in Harvard Square on Thursday. The advocates also expressed anger that former Union Carbide Corp. CEO Warren Anderson remains free despite having a standing warrant out for his arrest in India to this day.

Advocates Picket Sox-Diamondbacks Game in Protest of Anti-Immigrant Arizona Law

BOSTON/Fenway - About 100 immigrant, labor, community and religious advocates held a picket outside the Boston Red Sox-Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game at Fenway Park on Tuesday in opposition to an Arizona law that they believe is discriminatory to immigrants. Organizers said that they were calling on Major League Baseball to reschedule the 2011 All-Star game to a city outside of Arizona - which is the target of growing international boycott since the April 23rd passage of the controversial legislation SB 1070.

Immigrant Students Continue State House Vigil to Stop Anti-Immigrant Budget Amendment

BOSTON/State House - Over 11 days ago, activists from the Student Immigrant Movement began a vigil outside the State House to protest a budget amendment recently passed by the Mass. Senate that would - among other things - bar them from attending public colleges in the Commonwealth at the same in-state tuition rate as other area students.

BOSTON/State House - Over 200 immigrant, labor, religious and community advocates held a rally in front of the Grand Staircase in the State House on Thursday to protest anti-immigrant legislation that was recently passed by the Mass. Senate, and to demand that Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) start speaking out on immigration issues. Organizers said that Brown has "remained silent" on the immigration reform debate since taking office.

Striking Shaw's Workers Complete March for Justice with Prudential Center Picket

BOSTON/Back Bay - Completing a 5-day, 60-mile march, striking workers from the Shaw's Distribution Center in Methuen, Mass. and their supporters arrived at the Shaw's supermarket at the Prudential Center for a picket and rally on Thursday. Over 100 people gathered in front of 2 entrances to the store for about an hour - demanding that Shaw's management on-site come out and talk to them, and telling passers-by to boycott the chain.

Prisoner Advocates Oppose Pay-to-Stay Amendments in State Budget Proposals

BOSTON/State House - Outraged at the recent passage of Mass. House Budget Amendment 26, 50 local advocates for prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families held a rally and press conference opposite the State House steps on Tuesday. The amendment would allow county jails to charge prisoners $5 a day out of their canteen fund to defray some of the costs of their incarceration - in addition to other smaller fees. The Senate will be voting shortly on 3 similar amendments.

Palin Tea Party Express Come to Boston

BOSTON/Boston Common – Nearly 5,000 people descended on the Boston Common last Wednesday morning to attend the last scheduled rally on the third Tea Party Express national tour. The special guest was former Alaska governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, who spoke to the crowd in the late morning.

Arroyo and Turner Show Support for Honduran Democracy Movement at City Hall Press Conference

BOSTON/Government Center - Two Honduran activists presented the findings of a recent report by the Honduran human rights organization Committee of Relatives of Detained and Disappeared in Honduras (COFADEH) to an audience of over 30 concerned area residents at City Hall last Wednesday. The report accuses the recently-elected Honduran President Porfirio Lobo Sosa of presiding over a dictatorship that is prosecuting grave human rights abuses on its own population.
