Protests at Rite Aid Drugstores Focus on Employer Abuse and the Need for Congress to Pass the Employee Free Choice Act

BOSTON - Protesters converged on seven Rite Aid drugstores in Massachusetts on Friday, April 3 to condemn the company's abuse of workers' rights and urge Congress to pass the "Employee Free Choice Act" -- a law backed by President Barack Obama that would better protect employees who want to form unions by limiting employer interference in the process.

Relating stories from her coverage of (and arrest at) the 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions, Goodman discussed the important role independent media plays in facilitating meaningful and informative public discussions.

Cambridge, MA - Michael Albert of Z Magazine and Prof. Noam Chomsky of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology spoke to an audience of over 200 at a panel on Building a Society from Below in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States. They were joined by Gregory Wilpert of Venezuela Analysis and Julio Chávez, former mayor of the Torres municipality of Venezuela. The event was sponsored by the Boston and New York Consulates of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Medford, MA - Only months after a new union contract was signed, Verizon management is engaging in a campaign to undermine employees' rights on the job and hinder their ability to provide quality customer service.

Members are being singled out for unfair discipline and constant surveillance. Union stewards feel increasingly frustrated because management is repeatedly violating hard-won quality and safety provisions in their union contract to increase productivity at any cost.

More than 40 Massachusetts labor leaders have signed onto a letter to President Obama raising concerns that some policy makers in Washington are backing health care reforms based on the state plan adopted two years ago. The Massachusetts plan features an "individual mandate" requiring all citizens to buy private health insurance. The letter sent today and spearheaded by the Jobs with Justice coalition, states:

The economic crisis is wreaking havoc on homeowners, jobs, education, and social services across the country. Now, in Massachusetts, vital health care services are under attack from budget cuts carried out by the Democratic Party governor Deval Patrick. As a result, Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), one of the largest health care providers in the Boston area, recently announced plans for deep cuts, closures, and layoffs.
