BOSTON/Copley Square - About 700 demonstrators from as far as Maine gathered to march against US wars, economic and foreign policy on Saturday. Groups marched with banners that read, "Fund jobs, health care and environment protection, not war and nuclear weapons," wearing paper mache costumes depicting the parents of war dead, and portraying street theater as "NAFTA," "The Military," and "The Economy" crashing their "Ship of Fools" at every opportunity. Rain Or Shine: Organizers Say October 17 Anti-War Rally Is A Go!
BOSTON/Copley Square - Organizers with the October 17 Mobilizing Committee and United for Justice with Peace held a press conference on Thursday to introduce several of the speakers scheduled for the anti-war march and demonstration that begins at noon this Saturday in Copley Square and to emphasize that the event will proceed in spite of a weather forecast calling for chilly temperatures and rain.
Rally organizers said they expect to draw 1,000 or more people to the Square in support of calls for the United States and its allies to withdraw combat troops from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq immediately.
Demonstrators Rally for Iran on Steps of Boston Public Library
BOSTON/Copley Square - Over 150 Iranians and sympathizers held a demonstration Saturday on the steps of the Boston Public Library in Copley Square as part of a global day of action in support of democracy and human rights in Iran. Demonstrators wearing green clothing and ribbons stood in front of a large banner that read "Help Free Iran," waving Iranian flags and signs reading "Peace Now," and "Bostonians for Iran." In the Midst of Market Crashes and Financial Meltdowns, Activist Works To Keep Old Problem of Poverty in Public’s Mind
BOSTON/Copley - For three days this week, anti-poverty activist Kip Tiernan has been praying, fasting, and gathering with friends and supporters in the Old South Church in Copley Square. The public event, co-sponsored by the Church and Tiernan’s Poor People’s United Fund was called a “Moral Witness to the Injustice of Poverty and Hunger.” Somewhat ironically, the cavernous sanctuary of Old South, with its towering ceilings and huge edifices, stands as a graphic reminder of the enormity of the problem.

BOSTON/Copley Square - NEWS BRIEF - Close to 40 community activists and residents rallied outside a Bank of America branch to kick off "Thursdays-at-the-Bank" afternoon protests that run through March 19 in Copley Square. Organizers are demanding, "No More Bank Bail-outs" and "Homes & Jobs for People!" The action spotlighted residents facing foreclosures.

BOSTON/Copley Square - On Tuesday, a 20 person delegation representing unionized security guards from the Service Employees International Union Local 615 - including guards, union staff, and supporters from the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice and Jobs with Justice - entered the lobby of the 200 Berkeley St. headquarters of Manulife Financial (formerly John Hancock) and attempted to meet with company management to enlist their support in ongoing contract negotiations with Manulife's security contractor, Securitas.
Religious Activists Rally to "Vote No on Question 1!"
BOSTON/Copley Square - On Wednesday, over 100 activists representing an array of religious and social justice organizations held a rally in front of the Trinity Church to launch an interfaith campaign to encourage Massachusetts residents to Vote No on Question 1 - a binding referendum question put on the November ballot by the Committee For Small Government that would end the state income tax in the Bay State. The Committee is a non-profit led by Massachusetts Libertarian Party activists.
