Americans Who Tell The Truth Event Features Historian and Icon Howard Zinn

Robert Shetterly, Maine-based painter and creator of the portrait book “Americans Who Tell The Truth” was joined by historian Howard Zinn on Friday for a program at Emerson College in Boston.

The student group Emerson for Peace and Social Justice hosted the event which featured many of Shetterly’s portraits of distinguished Americans. Following the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the artist began painting people he considers courageous for “speaking truth to power.”

During his presentation, Shetterly talked about his inspiration for painting these portraits. Zinn, a Professor Emeritus of Boston University and author of the “The People’s History” and numerous other works, gave a special guest lecture. Topical folk singer David Rovics also performed.
