CORI Reform Advocates Keep Up Pressure on State Legislators
BOSTON/State House - Advocates from serveral organizations rallied in front of the State House on Thursday to push for reforming the Criminal Offender Record Information system. The event was sponsored by the Commonwealth CORI Coalition a statewide coalition of over 110 organizations that are dedicated to passing comprehensive CORI reform. About 80 people gathered in front of the State House steps including representatives from organizations such as the Boston Workers Alliance and the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. The CORI reform bill is one that will decrease the number of years that criminal records are accessible by employers. Speakers at the rally and supporters of the lobbying effort spoke out on advancing the reform bill in hopes that former prisoners would be able to access jobs and housing easier after serving their time in jail. Last November the Senate passed a CORI reform bill but it is currently still awaiting a vote in the House in order to become law. After the rally attendees visited legislators' offices to garner support for the passing of the bill. This article is a news brief.
