Martin Luther King Day: Commemoration and Remembrance
Cambridge MA - On Monday over 100 people honored and remembered Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy by gathering at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Cambridge. After a welcome by Reverend Kim Hardy and a brief musical selection by Veronique Epiter Dr. King’s memory was commemorated with readings from his calls for peace social justice and societal transformation. The purpose of the remembrance was not only to recognize Dr. King’s civil rights accomplishments and campaigns for racial justice but also to acknowledge his often ignored anti-war and anti-imperialist viewpoints. Speakers quoted Dr. King’s stances on militarism materialism and racism. Haitian troubadour Gifrants also performed as part of the morning’s program. Brian Corr executive director of the Cambridge Peace Commission closed the commemoration by stressing that the most serious challenges to society were the same challenges that faced American society more than forty years ago – the “giant triplets of racism extreme materialism and militarism.” At the conclusion of the event attendees were invited for an informal lunch and gathering in the basement of St. Peter’s Church.
