Radical Cheerleading Group Protests Unfair Wages For Farmworkers Flashmob Style
Brookline MA - On Sunday May 22 Boston Sass Attack a radical cheerleading group led a flashmob in several grocery stores in support of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers an internationally-recognized Florida farmworker organization to demand one penny more per pound for picked tomatoes. The CIW has reached groundbreaking agreements with many leading food retailers including McDonald's Subway and Whole Foods. However workers are still paid the same piece rate (an average of $.50 per 32 lb. bucket) as they were 30 years ago. In an effort to pressure grocery store chains such as Stop & Shop and Trader Joe's who obtain their tomatoes from fields in Florida Boston Sass Attack performed outside the Brigham Circle's Stop & Shop store location first to the re-written tune of Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time " complete with a small marching band. The cheerleading squad then went to Trader Joe's located in Brookline where the flashmob took place in-store to the surprise of many employees and customers there. The last performance took place at another Stop & Shop store in Brookline where the group called on the store to help end the exploitation of farmworkers in the fields and enter into a fair agreement with the CIW.
