Support encuentro 5 ... Attend Their Benefit with Noam Chomsky on Wed. 11/19/08
We'd like to take a break from editorializing about the politics of the moment this week to encourage all Open Media Boston viewers to support the encuentro 5 (yes, it's a small "e") movement space that is home to our nascent office. As it happens there's a great way to do that by heading over to the Arlington Street Church next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. to catch a speech by Noam Chomsky - who has donated his valuable time to benefit Massachusetts Global Action, the parent organization of e5.
Prof. Chomsky will be favoring us with his usual trenchant critique of the global neoliberal order and its recent unraveling - with a likely foray into the recent U.S. elections.
Tickets are $15 in advance at http://www.encuentro5.org/home/event - and if you're feeling extra flush in these tough times by all means share a bit more of your lucre by dropping $50 a head to attend the 5:30 p.m. reception with the professor.
The curious may wonder why we're using valuable web real estate in support of another organization rather than asking for money for our publication. There are two simple answers to this: 1) we'll be asking for money for ourselves soon enough, and 2) like many progressive non-profits in Boston we owe a great deal to encuentro 5 and Mass. Global Action and are happy to take this opportunity to show our support.
There are few places for political organizations of any stripe - let alone left-wing - to have regular meetings and events on the cheap in Boston. Mass. Global Action has done the heavy lifting of creating the space as a home base for several worthy non-profits, and a base of operations for many, many more.
If progressive movements are going to survive and thrive in this city, everyone needs to get out and support such institutions whenever they are called upon to do so.
This is one of those times. Mass. Global Action needs to do well with this event to keep e5 moving forward; so please do us all a solid, buy some tickets and show up next Wednesday. Who knows? You might learn something. In fact, this is one of those rare occasions when we can pretty much guarantee you will.
Hope to see you all there.
