Introducing OMB's Open Court Project
When Open Media Boston staffer Jonathan Adams pitched me a new reporting project a few days ago, I thought "oh it'll probably be a couple of weeks before it gets underway ... might as well go ahead and focus on these six other things that I have on my plate right now." But nope, he pumped out a bunch of content right out of the gate, so it is with great excitement that OMB announces our new Open Court Project - our effort to help fill the large and growing vacuum in news coverage of significant court proceedings in the Boston area.
It seemed best to let Jonathan describe the initiative himself; so I asked him for a few explanatory bullet points. Here they are:
- The Open Court Project is Open Media Boston’s newest effort to bring the courts to our readers in a fuller, more creative, innovative, and enjoyable way,
- We’ll be looking at the cases that get little attention elsewhere in the media and shedding some light on one of the major institutions of our democracy,
- For the most part, we’ll be monitoring the US District Court in Boston, and spending our time reporting on cases involving employment, racial, sex and gender discrimination, disability, immigration, civil liberties, housing foreclosure, law enforcement and prisoners, among other important issues,
- We’ll also include links to the actual court documents for our readers,
- Once each week expect to see and hear the latest stories from the courts from the Open Court Project at Open Media Boston,
- For tips, comments, and suggestions contact us at opencourtproject@gmail.com.
That's the basic deal. Hope you all find it interesting and useful. Let us know what you think anytime the mood strikes.
We look forward to your feedback.
