Boston Police Bar Delivery of Winter Tents to #OccupyBoston Encampment

BOSTON/Dewey Square - Two incidents early this week suggest that the Boston Police Department is preventing activists from winterizing their encampment as the weather grows colder. The apparent police embargo on winter tents and insulation materials may have led at least one police officer to infringe on constitutionally-protected rights in his zeal to enforce it.

First #OccupyHarvard General Assembly Draws 500+; Harvard Yard Locked Down to Public Press and Some Students

Cambridge, Mass. - Harvard University's main quad - the famed Harvard Yard, bounded by Mass Ave., Peabody St., Cambridge St., Broadway and Quincy St. - was locked down in response to Harvard students, staff and faculty calling the first general assembly of Occupy Harvard this evening. All visitors without a Harvard affiliation - including members of the press - are being stopped at the five open gates of the walled complex by a combination of private security guards, Harvard University Police and Cambridge Police.

BOSTON/Dorchester - Over 50 members of Occupy UMass Boston - one of the many informal campus chapters of the Occupy movement that have sprung up around the United States - held a protest outside the inauguration of UMass president Robert Caret at the JFK Library on Tuesday. The students, staff and faculty present demanded a rollback of skyrocketing tuition and fees, a democratic process to replace the current UMass Boston strategic plan, and an end to the "corporatization and privatization" of public higher education in the Commonwealth.

Jill Stein Announces Presidential Candidacy on the Green Party Ticket at State House Press Conference

BOSTON/State House - Physician and environmental activist Jill Stein of Lexington announced her candidacy for President of the United States on the Green Party ticket at a press conference outside the State House on Monday. Best known as the 2002 Massachusetts Green-Rainbow Party gubernatorial candidate, Stein hopes to win her national party's nomination and be a progressive voice for working families in the 2012 election.

BOSTON/Roxbury – Over 400 Roxbury residents, activists, students, #OccupyBoston activists and supporters from around Boston assembled at Dudley Square for the first Community Speak Out/Rally on Friday. Jamarhl Crawford, editor of The Blackstonian, and Cornell Mills organized the Speak Out - which featured speakers ranging from Denise Williams, whose two nephews were murdered while returning from a family barbecue on July 4, 2011, to community organizer, educator and longtime political activist Mel King. The Speak Out was followed by a National Day of Protest Against Police Brutality on Saturday, October 22nd. The next Speak Out is slated to be held next Friday, October 28th.

BOSTON - Over 1000 peace activists and #OccupyBoston protestors held "March and Rally to Stop the Endless Wars at Home and Abroad" yesterday. The marchers kicked off the action outside the Park St. MBTA station and passed the downtown Hyatt hotel, and the Bank of America and Verizon buildings on their way to the #OccupyBoston encampment at Dewey Square. The event was part of a global day of action for democracy.

BOSTON - Over 2000 #OccupyBoston participants and supporters - mostly students from dozens of area colleges and high schools - marched across Boston on Monday to spread word about the growing movement against corporate control of our democracy, and to demonstrate their displeasure about the crushing burden of student loans and a host of related issues. The event began at the Boston Common's Parkman Bandstand and went through the park to quickly protest outside the State House and Fox News.

BOSTON/Dewey Square - The Tuesday 10/11/11 #OccupyBoston General Assembly opened with a representative sampling of experiences from the scene early yesterday morning, when Boston Police arrested over 100 protesters in response to the expansion of their Dewey Square encampment to an adjacent small park on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Feelings of disenfranchisement as well as hope were expressed as General Assembly participants shared their stories.
