Mass. Labor-Community Coalition Protests Corporate Tax Scofflaws at Financial District Demonstration

BOSTON/Financial District - Over 500 union members and community allies held a protest on the Rose Kennedy Greenway adjacent to the 1 International Place complex on Thursday April 14th to protest corporate tax breaks and demand a progressive tax system and job creation programs in Massachusetts. Organizers said they held the event near International Place because it houses or is near the Boston headquarters of State Street Bank, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank and Barclays.

Union Actions Commemorate King's Legacy Connect to Present Day

BOSTON - Union leaders rallied with some 300 supporters outside the Massachusetts Republican Party headquarters in Boston on Monday April 4th to recall the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and stand in solidarity with public sector workers. It was the 43rd anniversary of King's assassination. The rally was one of over 1,200 events nationwide coordinated by the union sponsored We Are One campaign.

Cambridge, MA - Members of the Boston Chapter of the Colombian left-wing opposition party Polo Democratico Alternativo (Alternative Democratic Pole) and allies held a Kendall Square protest against the appearance of former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe Vélez at the 2011 MIT Latin American Conference yesterday.

Boston Area Activists Hold Event to Build for April Media Reform Confab

Cambridge, MA - In preparation for a huge national gathering of media reform activists on April 8-10 in Boston, local activists gathered last week to discuss opportunities for organizing a reform network focused on Metro Boston.

About 50 people gathered at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge on March 22 to hear Nolan Bowie, Senior Fellow at the Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, and a panel of representatives of the local host committee for the National Conference for Media Reform.

WGBH Union Workers Rally Against Management's Imposition of a New Contract

BOSTON/Brighton - Over 75 members of the Association of Employees of the Educational Foundation/Communication Workers of America Local 1300 and allies from the Greater Boston Labor Council and Massachusetts Jobs with Justice held a rally outside the offices of WGBH on Tuesday to protest the public television station's unilateral imposition of its final contract offer in the current round of collective bargaining negotiations with a large group of its unionized employees.

UN Independent Water Expert Takes Testimony at Boston Hearing; Issues Report

BOSTON/Beacon Hill - Over 30 water advocates and allies attended a hearing convened by Catarina de Albuquerque, the United Nations Independent Expert on the right to water and sanitation, on Friday, Feb. 25th. De Albuquerque was in Boston as part of a mission "to examine the way in which the human right to water and sanitation is being realized in the United States" in the wake of the United Nation recognition of the right to water and sanitation last year by the UN General Assembly and the UN Human Rights council.

Tarek Mehanna Supporters Rally at Bail Hearing

BOSTON/South Boston - Dr. Tarek Mehanna, a 29 year old pharmacist from Sudbury, Massachusetts, entered the courtroom at the Moakley Federal Courthouse on Wednesday wearing an orange prison jumpsuit. Mehanna is being charged with conspiring to commit terrorism and lending material support to a global Islamic jihad against the United States. Defense attorneys, J.W. Carney Jr. and Janice Bassil, made several pre-trial motions, including a request that the judge to set bail so Mehanna could return home pending his trial in October.

Massachusetts Teens March for More Youth Jobs

BOSTON/State House - Over 1,000 teenagers and youth advocates from across Massachusetts marched from Copley Square to the State House on Thursday to lobby for more funding for youth jobs in the Fiscal Year 2012 Mass. state budget. Gov. Deval Patrick, several legislators and business leaders addressed the marchers at a rally in Gardiner Auditorium. Patrick called both for more funding for youth jobs in the upcoming budget and for the private sector to do its part to hire more young people - especially in the summer time when young people are out of school.

No Leniency for Chuck Turner at Sentencing

BOSTON/South Boston - Chuck Turner was sentenced to three years of incarceration at the Moakley Courthouse on Tuesday - ending a two year struggle by the embattled former Boston city councilor and his allies to stave off federal corruption charges. Constituents and supporters packed the courtroom and two overflow rooms to watched on closed circuit TV as lawyers on both sides made their case to US District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock. The atmosphere was bitter as hopes ran thin that Turner would be granted leniency.
