Immigrant and Civil Liberties Advocates Protest Mass. Participation in DHS Secure Communities Program

BOSTON/State House - Over 100 immigrant and civil liberties advocates held a protest in front of the State House today in opposition to a recent announcement by the Executive Office of Public Safety that Massachusetts will participate in the Department of Homeland Security's Secure Communities program. The controversial program would screen everyone arrested by local and state police to determine their immigration status.

BOSTON/Government Center - Temperatures dropped below freezing at the Government Center, but members of the American Civil Liberties Union and allied groups were out in force on Friday, marking the 47th anniversary of Human Rights Day with a vehement protest against what many view as the tacit continuation of U.S. torture policies under the Obama administration.

Student Immigrant Movement Rally Continues Pressure on Sen. Scott Brown to Support the DREAM ACT

BOSTON/Downtown Crossing - Over 300 immigrant students and allies held a rally at St. Paul's Cathedral today in support of the DREAM Act - a federal bill that would provide some undocumented immigrant students a path to legal residency in the US. Organizers from the Student Immigrant Movement hoped that the show of force would help convince Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) to join the rest of the Mass. Congressional delegation in backing the bill. SIM invited Brown to the rally, but he did not attend.

Open Media Co-operative Expected to Launch in February

BOSTON/Copley Square - On Tuesday, 18 people gathered in the Guatemala Room of the Community Church of Boston to hold the first organizing meeting of the campaign to launch the Open Media Co-operative - a new democratically-run business wing for Open Media Boston. The rationale behind the project and preliminary ideas for new co-operative's structure were discussed by OMB staff, and plans laid for a follow-up outreach and strategy meeting on Dec. 2nd. The goal of the upcoming meeting will be to organize enough founding members to launch the co-operative by February 2011.

Veterans for Peace Hold Annual Protest March/Rally at Veterans Day Parade

BOSTON/Faneuil Hall - Over 75 members of Boston area chapters of Veterans for Peace and supporters marched behind the Veterans Day Parade through downtown Boston Thursday. The veterans have tried for years to convince the parade organizer - the American Legion - to allow them to march with signs critical of recent US military interventions while chanting anti-war cadences. Without success.

BOSTON/Roxbury - On October 22nd, a video surfaced showing 12 police officers kicking and punching a presumably 16-year-old African American male on the Roxbury Community College campus in Boston, MA. Community members respond with outrage and organizing protests calling for reform and accountability. Press Pass TV was on the scene at one of the first protest rallies in response to the incident.

RCC Students Protest Police Brutality at BPD Headquarters

BOSTON/Roxbury - Over 50 Roxbury Community College students and community supporters held a protest against police brutality on Thursday in response to the beating of a 16 year old teenager by several Boston police officers on their campus on October 22nd. According to the police, the teen had escaped from a nearby junvenile detention facility and was resisting arrest. It is not yet known how the police knew the teen was on the RCC campus.

Student Labor Activists Protest Sweatshop Conditions for Rite Aid Warehouse Workers

BOSTON/Fenway - Several local members of United Students Against Sweatshops and labor supporters gathered outside the Rite Aid at 1295 Boylston St. yesterday to protest what they call "sweatshop conditions" for workers at Rite Aid's Southwest Regional Distribution Center in Lancaster, CA, where 550 workers are in the sixth year of a struggle to join the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and bargain a contract.

Housing Advocates Demand End to Foreclosures Outside American Banking Association Confab

BOSTON/Back Bay - About 50 housing advocates from City Life Vida Urbana, Mass. Jobs with Justice, Service Employees International Union and various community organizations held a protest across the street from the Hynes Convention Center on Sunday where a meeting of the American Banking Association was taking place. The activists demanded "that banks immediately halt foreclosures in all 50 states and work to keep families in their homes through real mortgage modification, including reduction of principal.

Public Higher Education Advocates Conclude Cross-State March for Increased Funding with Boston Common Rally

BOSTON/Boston Common - Ten students, staff, faculty, and alumni from the Public Higher Education Network of Massachusetts concluded a 114-mile march across the state to defend public higher education with a Thursday rally on Boston Common attended by over 150 supporters. The marchers stopped at seven campuses to raise awareness and gather thousands of signatures on a statement in support of their "Great State of Mind Campaign" - which they delivered to legislators at the conclusion of the event.
