Video: Verizon Workers and Allies Picket Harvard Square Verizon Wireless Store

Cambridge, MA - Several people, including students and members of at least three local unions, participated in an informational picket today at the Verizon Wireless store in Harvard Square. The action was one of dozens of similar pickets that have been organized outside Verizon Wireless stores in support of the strike against Verizon by over 45,000 of its unionized workers that began on August 6th.

BOSTON/Government Center - About 40 environmental activists on bicycles converged at Government Center on July 7th to let Massachusetts residents know about Sen. Scott Brown's vote “to gut the Clean Air Act.” To show their unity they wore red t-shirts, chanted the slogan “Scott Brown let us down,” and carried puppets of Scott Brown with "fat cat lobbyists."

Activists Show Support for Green Jobs Bill and Other Causes at State House Lobby Day

BOSTON/State House - Dozens of labor and community activists showed up in support of a green jobs bill at a hearing of the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Energy and Natural Resources at the Massachusetts State House on Thursday. The bill, H. 1774, An Act Regarding Community Access to Energy Efficiency Programs and Green Jobs would require that all utility companies operating in the Commonwealth provide data showing what populations their energy efficiency programs are reaching, and expand access to energy efficiency services by establishing new weatherization goals.

Labor Advocates Push for Temp Agency Regulation Face Strong Industry Opposition

BOSTON/State House - Supporters and opponents of a bill that would change the way temporary agencies do business in Massachusetts squared off in front of the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development on Thursday in Gardiner Auditorium at the State House. Advocates for the Act Updating and Streamlining the Employment Agency Law (House Bill 1393) - which they dub the “Reform Employment Agency Law” or the “REAL bill" - made the case that bottom feeders in the temp industry are operating outside existing labor law and exploiting workers due to a lack of regulation.

Civic Counsel Protests Grand Jury Investigation of Boston Supporters of WikiLeaks

BOSTON/Government Center - Eighty people protested at City Hall Plaza early Wednesday evening in solidarity with Boston activists subpoenaed to testify in the ongoing grand jury investigation of WikiLeaks taking place in U.S. District Court in Alexandria Virginia. The Boston protest was organized by Civic Counsel a new organization of Boston University and MIT students founded last week in response to the grand jury investigation. News of the subpoenas broke on June 9th when one of the Boston activists David House publicly disclosed his identity.

Tenant Coalition Protests Bank of America, Urges Kerry and Brown to "Tax the Cheats, Save Our Homes"

BOSTON/Beacon Hill - Over 30 people - mainly residents of housing subsidized by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and tenant organizations in the Save Our Homes Coalition - held a protest at the Bank of America on Cambridge St. on Saturday "to urge Sens. Scott Brown and John Kerry to tax the wealthy and big corporations"to prevent cuts to HUD that would displace thousands of Massachusetts tenants if enacted."

Cambridge Water Main Breaks; Lake Broadway Formed - PHOTOS

Cambridge Mass. - A major water main broke open late yesterday evening at the intersection of Broadway and Trowbridge St. - flooding Broadway from near Ware St. to near Ellery St. about 100 feet of Trowbridge St. and adjacent Joan Lorentz Park where it has now pooled close to the entrance of the Main Branch of the Cambridge Public Library. Some water from the park is pouring into sewers on Ellery St. but it is unclear as of this writing when the main will be shut off and how long it will take city and Massachusetts Water Resources Authority workers to drain the area.

Boston Area Events Celebrate May Day 2011

BOSTON and Chelsea MA - Two events were held in the Boston area on May 1st to celebrate May Day - the traditional international workers holiday. About 200 people held a May Day rally on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. City Counselor Charles Yancey Jean Claud Sanon Kwami Somburu Sergio Reyes of the Boston May Day Committee and Tito Meza of Proyecto Hondureno were featured speakers. There was also a performance by Bread and Puppet Theater. The attendees then proceeded to Maverick Square in East Boston then marched down Meridian St.

Workers' Memorial Day Commemorated at Mass. State House

BOSTON/State House - Over 200 union members, allies, and family members representing the 47 Massachusetts workers who died on the job over the last year gathered in front of the Mass. State House yesterday to commemorate Workers' Memorial Day. Many attendees carried placards that read “Mourn for the Dead, Fight for the Living” - paraphrasing the early 20th century labor leader Mother Jones.

Immigrant Advocates Hold Picket Outside Patrick Book Signing in Protest of His Support for Secure Communities

Cambridge, MA - Last Friday, over 25 protestors representing several Boston area immigrant, labor and community organizations held a picket outside Gov. Deval Patrick's signing of his new memoir "Reason to Believe" at the First Church in Harvard Square. The demonstrators said they were there to criticize Patrick's support for Massachusetts' participation onto the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Secure Communities plan - which will share databases between local police departments and U.S.
