Prosecution of Union Member Arrested During a Legal Picket at Insomnia Cookies Continues

Medford, Mass. – A union member arrested last year on a legal picket outside Insomnia Cookies near Harvard Sq. attended a hearing at Cambridge District Court in Medford on Tuesday. 

Jason Freedman, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World union, was charged by Cambridge Police Department with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct following his arrest on November 14; charges he adamantly denies.

Grandmother Assaulted and Wrongfully Arrested at Own Home by Worcester PD, Lawsuit Alleges

Worcester, Mass. – A grandmother is suing a member of the City of Worcester’s Police Department, alleging that she was assaulted and falsely arrested at her home in February last year. 

Daisy Morales filed the lawsuit against Officer James Powers at the US District Court in Worcester, Mass. on Friday, after what her court complaint alleges was a “vicious beating and unwarranted arrest” by the defendant as a lesson for “questioning his police authority.”

Nobel Peace Prize Nomination for Massachusetts Group Monitoring US Military Spending

Northampton, Mass. - A nonprofit based in Northampton, Mass. has recently been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize due to their work monitoring military spending in the US.

National Priorities Project (NPP) received the nomination from the International Peace Bureau (IPB) – an historic antiwar organization, and former winner of the award – and it was made public on January 25 in a statement on IPB’s website.

BOSTON/South Boston – Members and supporters of the Boston Public Schools’ bus drivers’ union, United Steelworkers Local 8751 rallied Saturday at the Freeport bus yard in South Boston.

The union is continuing with its call on Veolia Transportation to reinstate four of the union’s leaders after they were terminated last year.

Brockton Cops Illegally Entered Cape Verdean Family’s Home, Used Excessive Force in Arrests, US Court Finds

Brockton, Mass. - A judge has ruled that members of the Brockton Police Department illegally entered the home of a Cape Verdean family in 2008, and used excessive force while arresting family members.

Officers Thomas Hyland and Brian Donahue were found liable of illegally entering the Barbosa family home on November 15, 2008, following a noise complaint to police.

Officers Hyland, Jesse Drane, Steven Johnson, and Frank Baez were also found liable of using excessive force while arresting members of the family.

Richest 10% Own 86% of World’s Wealth According to Oxfam Report Author

A new report by the international charity Oxfam has shone a critical light on global inequality, finding that the richest 10 per cent of people own a staggering 86 per cent of the world’s wealth.

Working for the Few was published by the NGO ahead of the World Economic Forum last week in an effort to raise the issue of inequality with political and business leaders at the meeting in Davos, Switzerland.

Climate Change Preparation Plan Announced by Gov. Patrick as Threats to Bay State on Rise

BOSTON - Acknowledging the growing threat that climate change poses to the Bay State, Governor Deval Patrick unveiled a $50m preparedness plan January 14.

It’s expected that $40m will be allocated to a municipal grant program – which will enable towns and cities to avail of resources to upgrade energy services – and $10m will go towards coastal infrastructure and dam repair.

New Bedford, Mass. – A supervisor at Sea Watch International Seafood died after becoming trapped in clam-shucking machinery while working a night shift Thursday.

Victor Gerena, 35, who was the father of several children and originally from Puerto Rico, was tragically killed after he became entangled in machinery he was trying to clean; the exact details of which are not yet known.
