Anti-Foreclosure Rally Results in Delayed Court Date

BOSTON/Government Center - Labor and tenant organizers gathered in front of the Suffolk County Housing Court Thursday morning to support the family of Dorchester resident Ramon Suero in an anti-foreclosure rally. City Life/Vida Urbana and UNITE HERE Local 26 held the rally and press conference to announce their support of Suero and his family in the fight to keep their home. Their condo unit at 26 Elder Street in Dorchester is worth $80,000 dollars, according to assessments made by contractors working with City Life.

#Anonymous Mourns Loss of Aaron Swartz at Boston Protest Demands Legal Reforms

BOSTON/South Boston - Members of the Internet collective known as Anonymous took to the streets of Boston yesterday in memory of fellow activist Aaron Swartz, who took his own life earlier this month, and to protest the criminal prosecution that they believe contributed to this death.

But despite the sinister grins of their characteristic Guy Fawkes masks, the protest had a much more somber tone than many of Anonymous’ previous public actions.

BOSTON/Downtown Crossing - Thirty protesters battled the bitter cold in front of Downtown Crossing's H&M on Monday evening to hold a Martin Luther King Day candlelight vigil to honor fallen sweatshop workers in Bangladesh. They mourned 112 workers who died in a garment factory fire on November 24th, 2012.

Labor Activists Protest Harvard Layoffs Citing Discrimination

Cambridge, Mass. - Labor activists, Harvard University employees, and friends and family rallied today in Cambridge to protest the laying off of three University Financial Services workers, citing apparent discrimination.

The emergency rally was held with just a day of notice, after Darlene Tate, a Harvard staffer with more than 25 years of experience in accounts payable, was informed Thursday she was being laid off shortly after returning from disability leave.

Progressive Advocates React to Gov. Patrick's State of the Commonwealth Address

BOSTON - Governor Patrick decided that it was finally politically viable to announce goals targeting growth, ending an era of budget austerity and slim pickings for working families in yesterday's State of the Commonwealth address. His proposed budget included a two percent cut in the sales tax from the current rate of 6.25 percent to 4.5 percent. Income tax would increase from 5.25 to 6.25 percent, with revenue entirely directed to a public works fund.

Councilor Pushes for More Access to Hubway Bike Sharing Program

BOSTON/Government Center - Boston’s bike-sharing program is heading into its third year as a major success, exceeding ridership expectations and planning to expand. But one city councilor has expressed concern that not all parts of the city are benefitting from the project’s success.

Councilor Charles Yancey, as part of the authorization of a $300,000 grant to expand the Hubway program, asked city staff involved to create a written plan for expansion into underserved areas such as Jamaica Plain, East Boston and Mattapan.

One World Cuisine Restaurant Group Sued Again By Underpaid Workers

Somerville, MA - Sixteen Centro Presente organizers and local Somerville residents stood outside of Diva Indian Bistro on Friday evening to protest the restaurant's firing of one of their workers. Diva Indian Bistro is owned by One World Cuisine, a company that owns multiple restaurants in the Greater Boston Area. Seven workers were fired from these restaurants and are currently suing for $183,500 in unpaid wages, unpaid overtime, and minimum wage violations. Work was performed in Mumbai Chopstix, Cafe of India, Bukhara, and Diva.

Upper Crust Ordeal Intensifies

BOSTON - Upper Crust Pizza filed for bankruptcy protection last month – following years of legal battles with staff, creditors, and regulators. The local chain owes employees about $850,000 in back pay and wages. One hundred and forty workers will continue to stay home after being laid off when the company closed 10 of its 16 locations indefinitely on November 13th.

BOSTON/Downtown Crossing - “Burning carbon is the whole point of digging it out,” said Naomi Klein, during the advocacy group 350.org’s "Do the Math" tour stop at the Orpheum Theater in Boston on Thursday night. The five top global oil companies made a profit of 137 billion dollars in the past year, according to visuals on 350.org’s slideshow. Bold words on the screen continued by reading, “The fossil fuel industry cheats,” winning nods of approval from the audience.

BOSTON/Copley Square - Noam Chomsky and Vijay Prashad shared their thoughts Thursday on the outcome of the recent US elections to four hundred people at Old South Church in Boston, MA USA. The dance and percussion group Scaramouche warmed up the crowd. Additional analysis was provided by Sam Christiansen. The event was a benefit for Massachusetts Global Action/encuentro 5.
