Human Rights Advocates Challenge Harvest Co-op Board Decision to Halt Referendum to Boycott Israeli Hummus

Cambridge, MA - Over 20 human rights advocates attended a Harvest Co-op board of directors meeting last Monday to push the Harvest board to reconsider their decision to stop a proposed membership referendum from moving forward to a vote. The referendum in question proposed removing the Sabra and Tribe hummus brands from the co-op's store shelves - on the grounds that both brands were owned by Israeli companies complicit in that nation's human rights violations against Palestinians.

Progressive Organizing Space Moves to Park Street

BOSTON/Park Street - The progressive organizing space encuentro 5 is moving. After six years at 33 Harrison Avenue in Chinatown, they've pulled up stakes and set up anew in a more central location in the Park Street area. Resident organizations held their first meeting in the new space last Thursday, and they expect to be open for meetings and events soon. Somerville, Mass. - A dozen immigrant and labor advocates from Centro Presente and allied organizations held the latest in a series of protests at Diva Restaurant in Davis Square on Thursday - demanding tens of thousands of dollars in back wages they say are owed to seven immigrant employees of One World Cuisine, the owner of Diva and several other restaurants in the Boston area. A simultaneous protest was also held at another One World Cuisine restaurant, Bukhara in Jamaica Plain. The protests will continue until the workers grievances are redressed.

BOSTON/State House - Two dozen activists from the Mass. Alliance Against Predatory Lending and allied organizations held a press conference in support of a bill to "Prevent Unlawful and Unnecessary Foreclosures" at the State House on Tuesday. The bill, House 4096/Senate 2298, was intended to strengthen 2010 state legislation that provided banks with incentives to meet with threatened homeowners to prevent foreclosure.

BOSTON/Copley Square - Over 40 Occupy Boston activists held a rally in Copley Square in solidarity with the No NATO protests in Chicago on Sunday. Several attendees spoke on themes ranging from government repression of dissent to the need to support the Montreal student strike that has been going on for the last several weeks. There was a light police presence, no incidents and no arrests.

BOSTON/Government Center - Following a march from Copley Square, over 100 activists from Occupy Boston, Boston May Day Committee, Student Anarchist Federation, and several other progressive organizations held a traditional May Day rally at Boston City Hall Plaza on Tuesday at lunchtime. Many attendees then proceded to an immigrant march from East Boston to Everett later the same afternoon.

BOSTON/Roxbury - Close to 300 people - led by African-American students in the new Boston4Justice network - marched from the Ruggles MBTA Station to Dudley Square on Saturday to demand that George Zimmerman, the confessed killer of Sanford, FL teen Trayvon Martin, be put on trial for murder. The event was peaceful. There was a moderate police presence, no incidents and no arrests.

MBTA Fare Hikes and Service Cuts Draw Transit Activists to Protest at State House

BOSTON/State House – By many measures, Wednesday was not a good day for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Agency. A fire between Park Street and Downtown Crossing caused a long delay on the Red Line during the morning rush hour. In the afternoon, the Agency’s board voted 4 to 1 to raise fares on the “T” by an average of 23 percent and to cut services as a way of partially closing a budget gap this fiscal year of at least $160 Million.

Immigrant Advocates Hold State House Vigil in Opposition to Anti-Immigrant Bill

BOSTON/State House - Over 75 immigrants and allies from religious, labor and community organizations held a vigil in front of the Massachusetts State House against Mass. Senate Bill 2061/House Bill 3913, "An Act to Enhance Community Safety", for several hours on Tuesday in hopes of pressuring legislators to kill it in committee. The event was organized by Centro Presente.

BOSTON/State House - Over 300 activists representing at least 65 community organizations and unions from around Massachusetts held a rally in front of the State House today in opposition to a proposed "Three Strikes" bill that they say will disproportionately affect low income communities of color and cause already overcrowded prisons to become even more overcrowded.
