City Hall Rally Calls to Restore Funding for Youth Summer Jobs

BOSTON/City Hall - With federal stimulus funding for youth summer jobs off the table in the wake of a failed U.S. Senate vote earlier this month, over 200 Boston teenagers attended a rally for youth jobs on Tuesday called by City Councilor Felix Arroyo and several community organizations - including Teen Empowerment, Hyde Square Task Force, Project RIGHT, Project HIP-HOP, Maverick Landing, Reflect and Strengthen, and Medicine Wheel.

BOSTON/Boston Common - Over 125 students, faculty, staff and alumni from several Massachusetts public colleges rallied Monday on Boston Common to pressure the state legislature to increase funding for public higher education. BOSTON/State House - In the face of continued conservative resistance to immigration reform proposals nationwide, over 100 undocumented immigrant students and allies attended the Wednesday January 27th hearing of the Mass. legislature's Joint Committee on Higher Education in State House Hearing Room B-2 in support of "An Act Relative to Equal Access to Higher Education and Generating Revenue for the Commonwealth" (S. 603/H. 1175).

Advocates Push CORI Reform Bill in House After Recent Senate Victory

BOSTON/State House - After successfully pushing a reform bill through the Mass. Senate last year, over 125 advocates of changes to the state Criminal Offender Record Information system held a rally in State House Hearing Room B-2 Wednesday before lobbying key legislators that can help move the House version of the bill towards passage this year. The event was organized by the Commonwealth CORI Coalition - which represents over 90 organizations in support of CORI reform.

Climate Justice Activists Rally Deliver Letters to Sens. Kerry and Kirk

BOSTON/Government Center - Over 25 people congregated on a rainswept City Hall Plaza Monday at a rally called by the Massachusetts Mobilization for Climate Justice. The action aimed at pressuring politicians to push for more far-reaching policies to deal with the negative effects of climate change. Organizers also commemorated the 10th anniversary of the mass protests by labor and environmental groups against the 1999 World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle - which were widely-credited with effectively shutting down the proceedings and forcing a public reevaluation of corporate-driven global political and economic agendas.

MBTA 55 Bus Off the Chopping Block; Meeting to Save the Route Becomes Meeting to Improve It

BOSTON/Fenway - A public meeting called by the Fenway Community Development Corporation to organize area residents to oppose the MBTA's proposed cut of the 55 bus route Monday, took a positive turn when State Rep. Byron Rushing's (D-Boston) aide Elizabeth Corcoran-Hunt announced that no bus routes were slated to go on the chopping block in the wake of an independent review of the T commissioned by Gov. Deval Patrick and released earlier this month. The 55 bus runs from the Fenway up Boylston St. to Copley Square and downtown Boston.

Mass. LGBT Advocates Protest Yes Vote on Maine's Anti-Gay Marriage Question 1

BOSTON/Boston Common - Immediately following the yes vote on Maine's Question 1, the "Maine Same-Sex Marriage People's Veto," over 100 Mass. gay marriage advocates held a protest on Boston Common next to the Park Street T stop on Wednesday evening. The question was put on the ballot by Stand for Marriage Maine - a coalition of conservative religious and social organizations - to overturn Maine's recently-passed gay marriage law. It was opposed by the progressive coalition Protect Maine Equality.

Housing Activists Rally to Demand Protection for Federally Subsidized Tenants

BOSTON/Hyde Park - A group of over 30 housing advocates - many of them tenants in apartments subsided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development - held a rally in Cleary Square Saturday in support of a raft of proposed legislation and treaties at all levels of government that would help low-income families remain in their current apartments at lower than market rates. The event was organized by the Mass. Alliance of HUD Tenants, a statewide coalition representing tenants in privately-owned, HUD subsidized apartments.
