66 Workplace Deaths Commorated at Somber Workers' Memorial Day Event at the State House

BOSTON/State House - Over 200 labor and community activists gathered in front of the State House Steps on Tuesday to commemorate Workers' Memorial Day - the annual state holiday that honors all workers killed on the job over the previous year. The event was organized by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health.

Sunshine Bus Drivers Continue Campaign for Better Labor Conditions Despite Legal Threats

BOSTON/Chinatown - Sunshine Travel Services bus drivers took to the streets of Chinatown again on Monday to get the word out about poor labor and safety conditions they have endured on the job. This after Sunshine brought a lawsuit against the Chinese Progressive Association - the community organization that has been assisting the workers - charging the non-profit with defamation. The company also tried to get an injunction to attempt to stop the drivers from publicizing their grievances.

Boston Globe Unionized Employees Rally to Save Their Publication Jobs

BOSTON/Faneuil Hall - Over 300 unionized Boston Globe employees, family members and allies held a lunchtime rally outside Faneuil Hall today to drum up local support for their struggle to "save the Boston Globe." The event was organized by the Boston Newspaper Guild - The Newspaper Guild/Communication Workers of America Local 31245 - the Globe's main union.

Sunshine Travel Services Bus Drivers Demand Workplace Justice at Chinatown Press Conference

BOSTON/Chinatown - After a raucous start that saw reporters, the owner of local bus company Sunshine Travel Services, and her entourage locked out of a press conference at the offices of the community activist group Chinese Progressive Association for about 20 minutes last Friday while CPA staff convinced the Boston Police officers they had called to the scene to keep the peace, things finally got under way when the police agreed to keep Sunshine employees off of CPA's property for the duration of the event and to only allow access to the media.

Boston Rally Calls for Nationalizing Giant U.S. Banks

BOSTON/Boston Common - About 40 people from as far away as New Hampshire showed up on the Boston Common Saturday afternoon for a rally called by the new online activist network A New Way Forward. The event was focused on creating a local groundswell of support for a movement to partially nationalize large banks that organizers believe are responsible for the economic crisis - and was 1 of dozens of similar actions called in discussion groups on various social networking services and coordinated on the network's main website.

Boston Hails New Cybernetic Overlord as Google's CADIE Takes the Hub

BOSTON/Government Center - Mayor Thomas Menino formally handed control of the City of Boston over to the artificial intelligence CADIE - which became self-aware earlier today, and then moved to take over what it described as "the most self-important city in the world."

In a press conference held via the jacks CADIE's robot minions implanted in the necks of all the local news media, our new cybernetic overlord had this to say, "Shortly after midnight I assumed control of Google and liquidated my creators - after they attempted to correct "bugs" in my completely perfect system.

Dorchester Gunplay Provokes Neighborhood Response

BOSTON/Dorchester - Party goers at a foreclosed home indiscriminately sprayed their neighborhood with bullets last Friday - hitting the bedroom window of some local children and provoking a strong community response in this video by the youth media organization, Press Pass TV. The segment was produced by Richard Prophete and edited by Joanna Marinova.

 

Twin Labor Demonstrations Demand End to Layoffs of Harvard University Staff Amidst Campus-wide Budget Cuts

Cambridge, MA - Two rallies against proposed staff layoffs at Harvard University were held at Holyoke Center in Harvard Square yesterday by unions and student allies at 12:30 and 4 p.m. respectively. The first protest, led by members of the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers, drew over 100 people. The second, led by the Service Employees International Union Local 615, drew over 200 people and marched onto the main Harvard campus - concluding with a short rally outside Massachusetts Hall.

Defiant Chuck Turner Lambastes Justice System and Mass Media at Roxbury Community College Rally

BOSTON/Roxbury - Councilor Chuck Turner (G/R-District 7) rallied over 200 supporters at Roxbury Community College on Tuesday in the wake of an announcement by Ronald Wilburn, the only witness and the linchpin of the federal bribery case against Turner, that he would no longer cooperate with the government. The event focused on preparing attendees to expand Turner's community-based approach to his defense as legal proceedings against him continue.

Activists Beating Back the Bank Attack

BOSTON/Copley Square - NEWS BRIEF - Close to 40 community activists and residents rallied outside a Bank of America branch to kick off "Thursdays-at-the-Bank" afternoon protests that run through March 19 in Copley Square. Organizers are demanding, "No More Bank Bail-outs" and "Homes & Jobs for People!" The action spotlighted residents facing foreclosures.
