Veterans for Peace Other Anti-War Groups Hold Peace Memorial

BOSTON/North End - Veterans for Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War, and Military Families Speak Out held a Peace Memorial on the Boston waterfront in Christopher Columbus Park on Memorial Day.

Among those who spoke out were Gold Star parents, Melida and Carlos Arredondo (below, center) of Jamaica Plain, MA. Their son Alexander was killed in Iraq.

CORI Marchers Welcomed by State House Rally

BOSTON/Beacon Hill - After marching for 5 days from Worcester to Boston for reform of the Criminal Offender Record Inquiry system in Massachusetts, a group of over a dozen ex-prisoners and supporters led by members of Ex-Prisoners and Prisoners Organizing for Community Advancement was received by a lively 250-person rally in front of the State House yesterday. Allies from labor, community and religious groups from across the Commonwealth were on hand.

BOSTON/South End - If a picture is worth a thousand words, then how many words might dozens of artworks by local kids express?

Quite a lot, if the expressions of many of the 200 attendees at Tuesday evening's 6th Annual YouthShines Art Auction - a fundraiser for the South End/Lower Roxbury Youth Workers' Alliance - at the Boston Center for the Arts were any gauge. And a diverse crowd it was.

Popular High School Teacher Obain Attouoman Deported by Federal Government

BOSTON/Fenway - Obain Attouoman, a popular math teacher at Fenway High School, was deported yesterday to his native country of Ivory Coast.

Details are sketchy. Parents were alerted to the teacher's deportation through an automated phone call that was transmitted to all student's homes.

In the message, Fenway High Assistant Headmaster Kevin Brill said only that Attouoman was arrested and then deported following his regular visit with federal immigration authorities at the JFK Federal Building in Boston.

Union Janitors March to Protest Planned Firings

BOSTON/Mission Hill - About 50 people - including affected workers, Service Employees International Union Local 615 staffers, and community allies - marched from the Mission Park apartment development in Boston's Mission Hill neighborhood to the 55-77 Pond Avenue Professional and Medical Suites in Brookline Village on Tuesday to protest the planned firing of over 100 unionized workers by Commercial Cleaning Service, Inc.

Lively pickets were held for about 20 minutes at both locations, which both have contracts with the janitorial services company.

Rally for Hospital Workers Shakes Up Longwood

BOSTON - Over 1000 workers from two dozen area hospitals and allied healthcare facilities showed up for a boisterous rally today at 4 p.m. on Avenue de Lafayette in the heart of the Longwood Medical Area. Their main demand was clear ... they want "free and fair elections" and respect for workers rights as they attempt to unionize legions of hospital workers in the Greater Boston area.

Boston Celebrates May Day

BOSTON - A diverse 300-person rally was held yesterday at 4 p.m. in honor of May Day, the traditional international workers holiday, at the Boston Common Bandstand. Various speakers at the event addressed the need for labor and immigrant rights. A number of musicians provided entertainment. About 15 anti-immigrant counter-demonstrators were also present, and were kept at the outskirts of the rally by Boston Police. At 5:30 p.m., the attendees - their ranks now swelled to 400 after more people got off of work - marched to Copley Square.

BOSTON/Jamaica Plain - Who or what was to blame for the killing of Luis Troncoso on Monday, April 21st? Gangs, lack of jobs and a social safety net, not enough police patrols? Those were the questions and factors considered at a standing room only meeting held Monday evening April 28th at Spontaneous Celebrations Community Center on Danforth Street in Jamaica Plain.
