Coalition Calls for Corporate Responsibility and Investment in Boston Neighborhoods; Chuck Turner to Seek City Council Hearing

BOSTON/Government Center - When the Boston City Council convenes its regular weekly meeting today, Councilor Chuck Turner (G/R - District 7) says he will seek approval for public hearings to assess the degree of responsibility of “financial institutions” and “large-scale corporations” for the current local and national fiscal crisis. Turner and concerned activists hope the hearings will be the first step in a process of figuring out how corporations can assist in improving the financial well-being of Boston’s neighborhoods.

BOSTON/South End - As over 350 housing advocates, politicians, bankers and realtors filled the main ballroom at the Colonnade Hotel on Monday for the half-day Open Doors conference - organized by the Citizens Housing and Planning Association together with The Warren Group (publisher of Banker and Tradesman) and a number of major banks with the stated purpose of helping pro-actively implement foreclosure relief in Massachusetts - about 15 protestors held a demonstration calling for a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures nationwide.

BOSTON/Government Center - A coalition of over 30 religious and community organizations held a rally Tuesday calling for an end to raids, mass arrests and deportation of thousands of undocumented immigrants around the nation by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. About 250 people participated in the event - which was coordinated by members of the Arlington Street Church Unitarian Universalist.

BOSTON/Leather District - As an immediate response to the growing financial crisis and the sub-prime mortgage scandal which was its major trigger, 30 people from local housing advocacy organizations and unions gathered in front of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston on Tuesday to demand a federal bailout for working families instead of financial services companies. The event was organized by the Boston Chapter of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now and the Massachusetts Alliance Against Predatory Lending.

Religious Activists Rally to Vote No on Question 1!

BOSTON/Copley Square - On Wednesday, over 100 activists representing an array of religious and social justice organizations held a rally in front of the Trinity Church to launch an interfaith campaign to encourage Massachusetts residents to Vote No on Question 1 - a binding referendum question put on the November ballot by the Committee For Small Government that would end the state income tax in the Bay State. The Committee is a non-profit led by Massachusetts Libertarian Party activists.

BOSTON/Government Center - About 30 unionized security officers and community allies gathered at 1 Washington Mall next to Boston City Hall yesterday for a short memorial event for fellow security officers killed in the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001.

Breaking News: Activists Gather in Roxbury But Fail to Prevent Home Eviction

BOSTON/Roxbury - About 50 people, activists from the Jamaica Plain based organization City Life/Vida Urbana, and their supporters, gathered in front of 76 Perrin Street in Roxbury today, to try and block police from evicting one of the building's residents, Paula Taylor, 43.

Six people chained themselves to the front and back entrances of the building.

Latino Workers Launch Campaign Against Labor Abuse; Call for Apology from Local Restaurants

BOSTON/Government Center - Workers contracted to clean and maintain several well known restaurants in the greater Boston area are accusing their employers of withholding wages, refusing to pay overtime, and other violations of state and federal labor laws.

Advocates from several immigrant rights organizations say more than thirty immigrant workers have not received portions of their salaries in recent months.

BOSTON/North End - On Saturday, 30 people marched from Copley Square to the Paul Revere Mall in the North End to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the execution of Italian-American anarchist organizers Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. Rallies at both ends of the march celebrated their lives, and mourned their deaths. The event was organized by the Boston-based Sacco and Vanzetti Appreciation Society.
