Verizon Settlement Provides New Union Jobs, Protects Health Care

A new tentative three-year contract settlement with Verizon achieves union employees' major goals of promoting union jobs and expanding bargaining rights, providing good health care for both active and retired workers, and increasing wages and pensions for 65,000 workers from Virginia to Maine, the Communications Workers of America and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers reported.

Verizon, Unions Agree to "Stop the Clock" -- Strike Action Postponed

The Communications Workers of America announced tonight that in light of progress that has been made in bargaining for a new contract with Verizon, it has agreed to "stop the clock" on the expiration of the current contract and postpone strike action while negotiations continue. The current contract will remain in effect.

The current contract, which covers 65,000 members of CWA and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) who work for Verizon from Massachusetts to Virginia, was set to expire at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, August 3rd.

Humanity is running out of time. That is the stark, bleak message offered by leading Australian reef scientist J.E.N. Veron to a gathering of 50 or so members of the Boston Reef Society this Saturday. By 2030, the oceans as a whole will be too acidic to sustain the coral reefs; well before then, krill populations—which feed everything from mega-mammals to birds and sea creatures much lower on food chain–will have fallen below critical levels.

Men Hit by Car in Mashpee Was a Work Zone Safety Hazard

One man was killed and another seriously injured after being hit by a car while working as part of a clean up crew in Mashpee yesterday. According to the Cape Cod Times, the two men, both in their 30s, were picking up trash as part of a community service program and contract with the state highway department.

The first LP record anyone ever gave me was a gift from my grandmother of Carlin's 1973 "Occupation Foole." I was 14. My grandmother hadn't listened to the record; she just knew Carlin from his appearances on The Tonight Show. Man, was she shocked... And I was hooked.

George: Please let us know how farts smell in heaven...

Seriously though, George was incredibly good at sniffing out and exposing the hypocrisy in all things social and political.
