BOSTON/Dewey Square - The Boston rally to honor programmer and activist Aaron Swartz had tearful moments, but it went beyond remembrance. Supporters of Swartz’s work called for a move from sadness and outrage to sustained political action that will reform computer regulations and the criminal justice system.
The following is a transcript of the Open Media Boston audio recording of a 6 a.m. press conference called by the Boston Police Department on December 10, 2011 on the corner of Atlantic Ave. and Congress St. to discuss their destruction of the Occupy Boston encampment at Dewey Square on orders from Mayor Thomas Menino. Boston Police Department Superintendent William Evans spoke on behalf of Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis - who did not attend.
BOSTON/Dewey Square - The Occupy Boston encampment in Dewey Square was completely destroyed starting at 4:58 a.m. this morning in a major operation by the Boston Police Department - working together the Boston Parks Department, other city agencies, and representatives of the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy.
BOSTON/Dewey Square - Midnight came and went with no evidence that Mayor Menino would make good on his threatened eviction of #OccupyBoston protesters from their Dewey Square encampment this morning.
BOSTON/Dewey Square - Two incidents early this week suggest that the Boston Police Department is preventing activists from winterizing their encampment as the weather grows colder. The apparent police embargo on winter tents and insulation materials may have led at least one police officer to infringe on constitutionally-protected rights in his zeal to enforce it.
BOSTON/Dewey Square - At 1:30 a.m. this morning, elements of the Boston Police Department, Transit Police and the Massachusetts State Police - with assistance from the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department - arrested approximately 100 protestors who engaged in non-violent civil disobedience in defense of a second encampment started by #OccupyBoston activists adjacent to their existing Dewey Square encampment yesterday on a stretch of the Rose Kennedy Greenway bounded by Purchase St., Pearl St., Congress St. and Atlantic Ave.
BOSTON/Dewey Square - About 40 activists from United for Justice with Peace and allied anti-war organizations held a standout yesterday in front of the #OccupyBoston encampment in Dewey Square to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the US invasion of Afghanistan. The organizers called for the immediate withdrawal of all troops from Afghanistan, and expressed solidarity with the broad aims of the #OccupyBoston movement.
BOSTON/Dewey Square - About 20 people from the Dewey Square #OccupyBoston encampment marched from South Station to Northeastern University this morning to demonstrate unity with thenationwide student walk-out that took place today at noon.
