Advocates Lobby Legislature to Restore Health Care Funds for 30 000 Mass. Immigrants to the 2010 Budget

BOSTON/State House - Over 75 people representing immigrant, labor and health advocacy organizations spilled out into the hallway during a packed State House press conference where a campaign was launched Wednesday to restore funds for health benefits for 30,000 immigrants covered by the Commonwealth Care program in the 2010 Massachusetts budget.

Local Hondurans and Supporters Demand Return of Democracy in Honduras at City Hall Rally

BOSTON/Government Center - Over 25 immigrant, labor, and religious advocates - some of them Honduran - held a brief protest between rain storms at City Hall against the military coup in Honduras this week and demanded that deposed President Manuel Zaleya be returned to power immediately.

Zeleya was flown to Costa Rica at gunpoint on Sunday and left there. The military coup was swiftly condemned by the Organization of American States and the United Nations - and by many expatriate Hondurans.

Commonwealth CORI Coalition Calls for Reform, Menino Agrees It's a "No Brainer"

BOSTON/State House - Mayor Thomas Menino joined other state officials Tuesday to voice support for CORI reform at a press conference held by Commonwealth CORI Coalition (CCC), a statewide coalition of more than 60 community organizations, labor unions and faith-based groups. CCC contends that Massachusetts' CORI system is broken and is promoting a CORI reform bill that they say would reduce criminal recidivism and joblessness.

Harvard University Workers Demonstrate Against Mass Layoffs

Cambridge, MA - Over 100 unionized Harvard University workers, students and supporters held a campus rally on Thursday in protest of the mass layoff of 275 employees earlier this week - representing 2 percent of Harvard's 16,000-person workforce. Organizers said that as the richest university in the world, with billions of dollars in its endowment, Harvard "owes more to community residents than mass layoffs."

Human Rights Advocates Demand Justice for Indigenous Victims of Government Massacre in Peru; Corporations U.S. Held Accountable

BOSTON/Bay Village - In response to the recent slaughter of indigenous activists who had been blocking highways in protest of recent government decrees that would have opened the Amazon rainforest to oil and mining companies - threatening their way of life - 25 human rights advocates from several local non-governmental organizations held a rally outside the Peruvian Consulate on Wednesday. At least 34 people were killed by elements of the Peruvian military on June 5 at blockades near the town of Bagua, Peru.

AN OPEN MEDIA BOSTON INVESTIGATIVE REPORT. Verizon's default wireless security for subscribers to its FiOS Internet and DSL High Speed Internet service has been shown to include several critical security flaws and weaknesses that Verizon phone support agents do not disclose to its customers. These weaknesses are exacerbated by poor training and installation practices that leave users vulnerable to network infiltration, identity theft and data loss.

Human Rights Activists Seek Immediate Release of Dr. Binayak Sen at Cambridge Protest Vigil

Cambridge, MA - Over 70 people representing a number of human rights organizations gathered next to the Harvard Square T stop yesterday evening for a vigil to protest the continued incarceration of Dr. Binayak Sen - a noted human rights activist and physician for indigenous communities in Central India - and mark the second anniversary of his imprisonment on what activists say are false charges.

Immigrant Advocates Demand End to ICE Detentions Protest at Suffolk County House of Correction

BOSTON/Dorchester - The outer walls of the Suffolk County House of Correction at South Bay rang with chants last Sunday as a group of 60 immigrant advocates marched and rallied in protest of the local prison's policy of accepting federal money to house unauthorized migrants after their arrest in raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The event was organized by the new Resist the Raids network and was endorsed by over 15 immigrant, labor and community organizations across Massachusetts.

Housing Advocates Push City Council for Moratorium on Foreclosures

BOSTON/Government Center - On Tuesday, over 60 housing advocates, tenants and supporters attended a hearing of the City Council's Committee on Government Operations organized by the Massachusetts Alliance Against Predatory Lending to push for a number of reforms to municipal and state housing policy. City Council president Michael Ross and Councilors Turner, Feeney (chair) and Connolly listened to testimony from a panel of housing experts assembled by MAAPL for well over an hour.

May Day March Brings Hope Excitement to Boston Area Immigrant Neighborhoods

BOSTON/East Boston - Over 500 people from 2 dozen immigrant, labor and religious organizations marched through wind and rain to demand more rights for immigrants and better labor conditions for all in the United States on the traditional May 1st workers holiday today. The group processed from Central Square in East Boston past Chelsea City Hall to Glendale Park in Everett - meeting groups of supporters along the way. Thousands of residents of the predominantly immigrant neighborhoods smiled, cheered, or stared in surprise as the marchers passed them by on the 3 mile march route.
