Activists Gather in Roxbury to Block Eviction

BOSTON/Roxbury - A group of activists from the Jamaica Plain based advocacy organization City Life/Vida Urbana, and their supporters, showed up yesterday morning to protect a single woman facing eviction from her condominium in Roxbury.

Paula Taylor, of 76 Perrin Street, said the response to her situation was "awesome."

BOSTON/Roxbury - Concerned about a rising tide of economic and social ills, over 100 local activists and advocates filled the hall at the First Church of Roxbury in John Eliot Square on Tuesday evening to watch representatives of grassroots organizations and labor unions testify to a panel of community leaders about the need for corporate landowners to do more to help Boston's neighborhoods thrive.

Former Seafood Palace Workers Hold South Boston Protest to Demand Back Wages

BOSTON/South Boston - On Monday, a group of 25 people - including former employees of the recently closed Seafood Palace Restaurant in Dorchester and supporters from the Chinese Progressive Association Workers Center, Mass. Jobs with Justice, and the Mass. Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health - met at the Broadway T Stop in South Boston and held a short rally before marching up West Broadway to Kim's Market to protest Seafood Palace's violation of various state and federal labor laws and demand justice for its laid-off workers.

SEIU Local 615 Stands for Security with Downtown March Rally

BOSTON/Downtown Crossing - Last Saturday, 75 people attended a "Stand for Security" march and rally called by the Service Employees International Union Local 615. The event was part of a national campaign that is seeking to unionize security guards in several cities across the U.S.

In Boston, Local 615 is attempting to organize 6 area security companies - 3 of whom have already recognized the union (Allied Barton Security Services, Securitas Security Services USA and Northeast Security), and 3 that have not (Apollo Security, Palladion Services, and USI).

BOSTON/Fenway - Four weeks ago, a popular Boston teacher - Obain Attouoman - was deported from the United States to his native country of Ivory Coast. Known to his students at Fenway High School as "Mr. Obain," the math teacher had been living and working in the U.S. legally since 1992.

Green Roots Festival Blends Politics and Fun in JP

BOSTON/Jamaica Plain - About 1000 people attended the Green Roots Festival to benefit Bikes Not Bombs last Sunday in the park opposite the Stony Brook T stop. The afternoon was filled with entertainment, environmentally-themed workshops and speakers including noted environmental author Bill McKibben, Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner, and Khalida Smalls of Alternatives for Community and Environment. Food was provided by area vendors. Fun was reportedly had by all.

Boston City Council Hearing on Safe Homes Initiative Sparks Lively Debate

BOSTON/Government Center - Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner (G/R - District 7) held a hearing Tuesday afternoon at Boston City Hall to solicit public testimony on his proposed resolution to modify the Boston Police Department's Safe Homes Initiative that currently allows police to visit homes and ask parents to allow a warrantless search for guns their children are suspected of possessing. Over 40 people were in attendance - about a dozen of whom gave testimony ... the majority in favor of the resolution.
